Answer number 2:
A great device that makes storing and organizing entire music collections possible.

How? By the extremely small Mp3 size, which is the exact reason why it has become such a popular audio format. An audio consists of many tones/sounds. A lot of these aren't consciously audible to the human ear. The method of compressing to Mp3 just means that these non hearable sounds are simply left out. By doing this, you can make the file a lot smaller, i.e. save space in the form of bytes/megabytes (MB).

A regular audio track, from a cd LP for example, has a size of about 30MB - 60MB. If you were to convert this audio track into an Mp3 file, you could compress it to about 3MB.

It is said that Mp3 files only need approximately 1MB of storage space per minute of good quality audio. But take into account, that the more quality you want, the more MB you'll need.

Most converter software let you decide what quality you want the file to have. The common size for a 4 minute audio track, for example, could be anywhere between 4MB - 6MB. With that in mind, an average blank cd with 700MB disk space can store only around 17-21 audio tracks, but about 150 Mp3 files. This equals about 7 to 10 LPs on just one cd.

Answer number 3:
Not necessarily just an Mp3 player.

Mp3 isn't the only digital encoding format, of course, but it is the most common and most popular right now.

Most Mp3 players on the market are also capable of playing WMA files, which are usually slightly smaller (in size and quality) than Mp3 files.

The biggest competitor to Mp3 is a format called AAC, also known as Mp3's successor. This is a small sized audio format that performs better than Mp3 and is used as the default format of apple's products (like itunes and iphone), Sony's Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii.

Other, less popular alternative formats are FLAC and OGG VORBIS, to name a few.

There are also other music players that are usually more expensive, but have more features and options than only playing Mp3 and/or other audio files.

These devices are known as Portable Media Players (PMP).

They are capable of showing video and picture files, and some can even display text documents. Add an integrated address book, a calender, notepad, an alarm clock, fm radio, voice recorder and maybe even DVB-T, which allows you to watch television on your portable player, and you have yourself a great allrounder.

The functionality of these devices is constantly increasing.

Answer number 4:
A data storage device.

If you own an Mp3 player, you do not need an extra usb memory stick. You already have one. Mp3 players can't reproduce all files directly on the player, but they still act as an external hard drive. For example, if someone has a Word document or PowerPoint presentation that you would like to have, you can copy and paste it onto your Mp3 player. You won't be able to see it on the player itself, but if you connect the player to a computer, the files will be there. You can then copy and paste the files onto your computer hard drive.

Transferring data has also become more convenient. Many Mp3 player models are able to transfer stored data to and from other Mp3 players, cameras, external hard drives, etc. directly via usb cable, or even wireless, using infrared, bluetooth or wireless-lan (WLAN) technology.

Answer number 5:
The perfect companion.

Because you have properly and thoroughly informed yourself, you know that the investment you will be making on a particular model will be the correct decision. After connecting it to your computer and transferring music onto it, you have a new-generation "walkman" that can do a lot more than it's cassette playing ancestor.

Not only can you listen to music on the go with regular headphones, but many new Mp3 player models have integrated bluetooth, that allows you to listen to music, wireless, using a bluetooth headset.

Connect it to your car stereo via usb cable or bluetooth if applicable.

Portable Mp3 players + water? No problem. Waterproof Mp3 players give you the liberty to listen to your music collection in the shower or while relaxing in the pool.
